The European edition of the Sustainable Foods Summit
(http://sustainablefoodssummit.com/europe/) will feature new technologies, food
ingredients, and green packaging. For the first time, the executive summit will discuss the
disruptive influence of new technologies on sustainable food production and marketing.
The programme comprises four sessions with distinct themes.
Toby Pickard, Head of Insight, Innovation and Futures at IGD, kicks off this session with
a keynote on digital trends and innovation. He will explain how technology is creating
radical and rapid change in the food retail industry. Insights will be given into how
customer datasets, artificial intelligence, and in-store machine learning can be deployed.
Each year, about 6 billion male chicks are culled because they are the wrong gender.
Martijn Haarman from Seleggt will introduce its new gender identification technique that
is preventing the killing of male chicks. Details will be given of the technology and its
current and future applications for ethical eggs. With rising concerns about food fraud, an
update will also be given on analytical tools for food authenticity and safety. Wayne
Johnson from OAL Connected will explore the prospects for artificial intelligence in the
food industry. Other topics include blockchain for traceability, mobile apps for
sustainable foods, digital marketing success stories, and big data implications & risks.
Sustainable Value of Ingredients
This session showcases new ingredients that are adding sustainable value to food &
beverage products. Veronica Guerra, Marketing and Communication Manager at
Agrasys, will explain how it has created a new sustainable cereal. Produced by traditional
breeding techniques, Tritordeum has lower environmental impact and greater nutritional
value than comparable cereals. Since its launch in 2017, it has received much accolade
(including Sustainable Ingredient at 2018 Sustainable Food Awards).
As plant-based foods continue to make headway in the food industry, an update will be
given on novel plant proteins. The nutritional benefits and applications of hemp
ingredients will also be explored. Other speakers will cover supply chains for organic
ingredients, ethical sourcing of flavourings, and emerging sustainable ingredients.
Green Packaging Solutions
Growing consumer awareness of plastic pollution has put packaging top of the
sustainability agenda for many food and beverage companies. The use of life-cycle analysis to measure the environmental impact of packaging will be discussed, followed
by papers on eco-design approach and sustainable materials. Andy Sweetman, EMEA
Sales & Marketing Manager at Futamura, will show how its cellulose-based materials can
be used in flexible packaging.
TerraCycle will give details of its new Loop shopping and recycling platform. Launched
in January, the new system enables food and beverage firms to move away from single-
use plastics. Paul Hendriks from EOSTA will share its Natural Branding concept. Used
on organic fruits and vegetables, the laser mark has saved 6.3 million plastic units and
396 metric tonnes of carbon emissions in its first 18 months.
Sustainability & Eco-labels Update
Amarjit Sahota, Founder and President of Ecovia Intelligence (event organiser) will give
an update on the organic & eco-labelled food market. Although organic is the dominant
eco-label, he will show how the number of labelling schemes is proliferating. Robert
Verkerk, Founder and Executive Director of Alliance for Natural Health International,
will make the link between sustainable foods and healthcare. He will call for a paradigm
shift in sustainable healthcare thinking, presenting the Health Sustainability Blueprint.
Other speakers will cover the advent of plant-based butchers, foods in a circular
economy, sustainability challenges, and retailing case study. Sustainability is often linked
to ‘doing the right thing’, however one could argue that such greater good is rooted in
ancient wisdom. Julian Baggini, Philosopher and Author, will draw key sustainability
lessons from Aristotle and Confucius.
About the Sustainable Foods Summit
The aim of the Sustainable Foods Summit is to explore new horizons for eco-labels and
sustainability in the food industry by discussing key industry issues in a high-level forum.
The 11th European edition will be hosted at the Radisson Blu Hotel Amsterdam on 13-
14th June 2019.
Other editions in this international series will take place in Asia-Pacific (2-3 September,
Bali), Latin America (28-29 November, São Paulo), and North America (22-23 January,
