Tate & Lyle Rolls Out New CLARIA® Functional Clean-Label Starches with High Performance and Great Taste to Asian markets at FIA 2015

claria-tate-and-lyleBangkok– 10 September 2015 – Tate & Lyle, a leading global provider of food ingredients and solutions, has launched its CLARIA® Functional Clean-Label Starches in the South East Asian region. At a press briefing held during the FIA, Asia’s leading food ingredients event, Tate &Lyle’s regional management addressed the growing market trend for clean label foods and demonstrated how the new CLARIA® line is meeting this demand by providing manufacturers with similar functionality to chemically modified food starches with the added benefits of a clean taste and clean label.

CLARIA® Functional Clean-Label Starches enable manufacturers to meet increasing consumer demand for simpler ingredient lists. Nearly 25% of new product launches globally were positioned as label-friendly in 2013.  This trend is also strongly reflected in the South East Asian countries with penetration levels of up to 20-25% for new clean label food products, and growing at over 21% for the past few years.

‘Tate & Lyle recognised the need for a high-performing starch with similar functionality to a chemically modified starch with all the benefits of a clean label.

The growth of clean label foods is taking off dramatically across Asia and now we are able to help food-makers in the region respond to consumer demand with superior food-products,’ said Gerd Frank Pedersen Regional Lead, Texturants Asia Pacific SFI, speaking at the FIA.

‘Although consumers demand simpler ingredient labels, taste and product experience are still primary drivers. The CLARIA® line helps provide a solution to address both of these needs’.

CLARIA® Functional Clean-Label Starches outperform other clean-label starches when it comes to meeting consumer expectations for taste, texture and appearance. Internal colourimetric and sensory testing demonstrated that the CLARIA® line delivers excellent smoothness and shininess and has a very neutral flavour profile and colour that is comparable to modified starches. This facilitates their incorporation in food categories that have historically had limited options with functional clean-label starches.

“whiteness” is critical.

Of particular significance is that CLARIA® has a white colour profile and does not impart dark colours on the final product. The appearance properties of CLARIA® are therefore highly beneficial in yoghurt or dairy desserts where “whiteness” is critical.

In addition to meeting high sensory standards, CLARIA® Functional Clean-Label Starches enable manufacturers to formulate with similar functionality of a modified food starch. The patent-pending technology of the CLARIA® line enables tolerance to shear, heat and acid, even under extreme conditions like ultra-high-temperatures (UHT) and homogenisation. It also demonstrates high thickening efficiency and texture consistency over time. ‘The technology behind Claria® Functional starches is pretty unique in the marketplace because it enables the use of a simple “starch” label and similar performance to modified starches, with a clean taste and neutral colour. A key advancement lies in Tate & Lyle’s proprietary processing, which allows the CLARIA® starch granules to remain intact throughout different processing conditions.’ said Rachel Wicklund Team Leader, Convenience/Dairy Applications SFI.

CLARIA® Functional Clean-Label Starches are versatile across a broad range of applications and sophisticated processes including soups, sauces, dressings, prepared meals and yoghurt. Dairy is expected to be a key application in Asia, where 1 in 3 yoghurt products are positioned as clean label and annual growth in clean label yoghurt products is at 45%*. The full line includes three products that have different levels of process tolerance: CLARIA® Essential, CLARIA® Plus and CLARIA® Elite.

Originally launched in October 2014 in the Americas and Europe, food and beverage manufacturers across Asia can now partner with Tate & Lyle to formulate with the CLARIA® line. ‘We see huge potential for the Claria® line here in Asia and we have a world-class team of applications experts in our Asia laboratories eager to co-create with manufacturers to bring the next generation of cleaner-label products to market with CLARIA® Functional Clean-Label Starches’, said Pedersen. ‘With our extensive expertise in ingredient formulation,

we can help customers solve their texture challenges across a wide range of applications’.

With the introduction of CLARIA® Functional Clean-Label Starches, Tate & Lyle offers Asian-based manufacturers more choice to develop label-friendly new products. The CLARIA® line forms part of a full portfolio of label-friendly solutions including SODA-LO® Salt Microspheres, TASTEVA® Stevia Sweetener, PUREFRUIT™ Monk Fruit Extract, PROMITOR® Soluble Gluco Fibre and PromOat® Beta Glucan.
