The fifth Latin American edition of the Sustainable Foods Summit (https://sustainablefoodssummit.com/lamerica/index.htm) will discuss the future of sustainable foods in the region. How are sustainable foods gaining traction in local markets? With Latin Americans some of the most avid meat eaters, what are the prospects for plant-based foods? How can food & beverage firms reduce their packaging impacts? How can the food industry make the transition towards a circular economy? Such questions will be addressed in a high-level forum in São Paulo on 28-29th November.
The summit comprises four distinct sessions…
1. Sustainability Best-Practices The Amazon is under the spotlight because of a high level of deforestation in the last few months; the summit begins with a keynote that outlines the role of the agri-food industry in halting deforestation. The keynote speaker will show how transparency and traceability in supply chains can prevent deforested land to be used for food products.
The Kisêdje Indigenous Association (AIK), located in the Wawi territory in Xingu (Brazil), will explain how traditional farming techniques can help preserve the rainforest. AIK has developed an alliance with other indigenous communities to produce Pequi oil and combat climate change. In recognition of its efforts, AIK received the Equator prize from the United Nations Development Program this year.
Carla Tennenbaum from Ideia Circular Brazil will show how the food industry can make the transition towards a circular economy. Guidance will be given to food and beverage firms so they can close their nutrient loops. Susy Yoshimura, Sustainability Director of Pão de Açúcar, will give insights into how the supermarket chain is approaching sustainability. Pão de Açúcar is one of the leading retailers of organic foods in Brazil.
2. Food Ingredients This session features ingredients that add sustainable value to food and beverages. Brazil has overtaken the US to become the world’s largest soya bean producer. However questions are being asked about traceability since soya beans have been grown on ‘cleared land’. Ernese Brosz from the ProTerra Foundation will give an update on sustainable soya sourcing.
Carrefour, the world’s second largest retailer, will show how it is building supply chains for organic ingredients in Latin America. Last year, the retail giant announced plans to achieve EUR 5 billion global sales from organic foods by 2022. In Brazil, it is investing in organic farming projects so that it generates 20% of its food sales from organic products. Other speakers will cover sustainable animal products, flavourings, and plantbased proteins.
3. Marketing Update The prospects for organic and plant-based foods will be discussed in this session. Gustavo Guadagnini from the Good Food Institute will share the latest market trends on meat and dairy alternatives in Brazil. Research shows that 30% of Brazilians are reducing consumption of animal products. Health and concerns for animals are the main reasons for the shift. Ricardo Laurino from the Vegetarian Society and Laura Kim from Veganismo Brasil will give a deeper understanding of the expanding number of vegetarian and vegan consumers.
Alexandre Harkaly, Executive Director of IBD, will give an update on the organic food market in Brazil. Organis will present the latest market trends in the organic food market, including details of the organic consumer. Barbara Dunin from the Global Compact Network Brazil will show how sustainability can create innovation in the food industry.
4. Green Packaging Solutions Growing consumer opposition to plastics has put packaging top of the green agenda for many food & beverage companies. This session discusses practical approaches to reduce packaging impacts. Veruska Rigolin from Futamura will discuss how cellulose-based biopolymers are being used to make compostable packaging materials. Sealed Air will show how packaging can help reduce packaging waste, whilst TetraPak will give an update on its packaging innovations. Luciana Pellegrino, Executive Director of The Brazilian Packaging Association, will explain how food & beverage firms can close their packaging loops. Success stories will be given of brands adopting green packaging solutions.
